The recumbents of Saint-Denis

0
The cathedral basilica of Saint-Denis is home to nearly 70 carved recumbents and tombs of French kings and queens. It was Louis IX who had the recumbents of sixteen of his predecessors buried at Saint-Denis sculpted (Clovis, Dagobert I, Pepin the Short and Queen Berthe, Robert II the Pious, Louis VI the Fat, etc). They also include Charles Martel, Duke of the Franks and mayor of the palace. The tradition of the carved recumbent statue continued until the 19th century. After the death of Louis IX, his ashes were buried in Saint-Denis in a gold and silver tomb which was stolen and melted down in the 15th century during the Hundred Years’ War.
