Gargoyles appear above the abbey of Mont-Saint-Michel. Sometimes, they have the shapes of monsters. But in reality they are only used to drain rainwater from the gutters. The gargoyles were therefore the guardians of Good, and by extension of the churches. Their terrifying appearance was made to remind the heretic, the non-Christian, the enemies of God that divine protection was already on the building. Legend tells that the gargoyles howled as Evil approached.
