This tower, seen from the sky, belongs to the Al Zubarah Fort, built in 1938 in the northwest of Qatar. One hundred and fifty years earlier, on almost the same spot, stood a fortified coastal town of several thousand inhabitants, Al Zubarah. The Qal’at Murair Fort, built on a promontory, protected the city's water resources. It had a large rectangular enclosure with corner towers and included an underground cistern, large wells and several buildings including a mosque (Murair Masjid). In the surrounding area, several enclosures were used for cattle breeding or date palm cultivation. Protected by walls, a 65.6 feet (20 metres) wide and 6.6 feet (2-metres) deep canal linked the fort to the shore. Still active after the destruction of the city in 1811, the Qal’at Murair Fort was finally razed in the 1960s.
