Of the various islands that make up the archipelago of New Caledonia, only Grande Terre - the main island - has rivers. With the exception of the Diahot river and the upper part of certain rivers such as the Ouaïème, they are generally oriented transversely to the Central chain and flow into the sea, which makes them 'fleuves' in French while only the Diahot is recognized as such.
