On an archaeological or excavation site, all traces of human occupation are likely to be drawn in order to constitute archaeological facts or structures. The graphic documentation of the excavated structures bears witness to the former presence of constructions (prints of posts, foundation trenches), the organization of the landscape (plot ditches, enclosures), and the daily life or burial practices of the inhabitants. Associated with photographic and written recordings, it contributes to the collection and safeguarding of the observed elements, sometimes later destroyed by the excavations themselves.
