The cliffs of Bessin

The cliffs of Bessin extend over 20 miles (32 km) between Grandcamp-Maisy and Arromanches in the Calvados department. From 33 to 246 ft (10 to 75 m) high, they are formed from bottom to top of limestone with massive Bajocian sponges, calcareous-marly beds of the lower and middle Bathonians intercalated in the basal and summit parts, and massive beds of Bessin limestone sometimes separated with clay beds. The place called La Falaise in Arromanches presents a 114 to 147 ft (35 to 45 m) high cliff made up of a limestone ledge and a marly base attacked by the sea, which creates a notch and promotes the formation of an overhang.
