The island of Lifou is a raised coral atoll formed by an immense karstified plateau whose average altitude varies from 82ft (25m) in the north to 131ft (40m) in the south and which corresponds to the bottom of the former lagoon. This plateau is bordered to the west by high vertical cliffs which are the vestiges of the former reef crown.
