On the island of Ua Pou, the volcanoes create a castle-like landscape bristling with twelve basalt dungeons. These dark pitons called 'necks' result from eruptions of viscous lava which, unlike the liquid flows, have resisted erosion. Their summits are lost in the clouds at more than 3,280 feet (1,000 m) of altitude. The name of the island means 'the pillars'.
