The different styles of Nordic skiing
2
0
Formerly focused on a single so-called classic style, Nordic skiing became more complex from the 1980s and now includes two distinct techniques: the classic style and skating (or freestyle). Skating made its appearance in the 1982 World Cup under the impetus of American Bill Koch and Finnish Puli Siitonen, who used skis without restraint wax and incorporated lateral thrusts in their movements. In 1985, Norwegian Ove Aulni made this emergent new style a reality by winning the world championships with similar skis. Finally, in 1990, the International Ski Federation (FIS) recognized skating as a fully-fledged style and split top-level competitions between the two styles.
