Why does Normandy have two lions as its emblem? In the Middle Ages, the coat of arms of the King of England, also Duke of Normandy, displays three lions, symbols of bravery. When the King of France took over Normandy in 1204, he kept the coat of arms, but removed one of the three lions as a token of victory.
