The dying days of Château-Gaillard

Château-Gaillard was a fortress built by the King of England Richard the Lionheart in 1196. It fell into the hands of the French armies in 1204 following seven months of siege during the Hundred Years' War. Later during that same year, all of Normandy was attached to the Kingdom of France, except for the Channel Islands. The fortress then held the different roles of a vacation resort, prison, and hideaway for thieves and counterfeiters until the Estates General demanded its demolition in 1598. Château-Gaillard became a stone quarry until the end of its dismantling in 1611.
