From birth, giraffes of both sexes have ossicones, cartilaginous frontal bumps that will ossify and grow to form protuberances covered with skin and hair. They develop from intra-integumentary ossification centers between the skull and the skin so that they will be covered with skin and hair. Because they often fight and practice necking, males progressively lose their hairs on top of their horns.
