Hard corals, atoll's superstructures base

At the contrary of the soft coral, polyps of hard corals secrete a solid calcareous skeleton. This calcareous skeleton is at the base of the formation of coral reefs. Indeed at the death of the coral, the skeleton will endure. As the years go by, the corals will continue to develop on the surface of this structure: this is how the coral reef is formed.
