A major agricultural resource in the Loyalty Islands, the coconut palm is much less present in Lifou than in Ouvéa where the soil is more favorable for its exploitation. In Lifou, where it already occupies most of its potential extension area, it is found on the coastal plains and near the residential areas but it is scarce in the ancient lagoon.
