Among the American military cemeteries scattered around France, the Normandy American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer is probably the best known and most impressive. It contains the graves of 9,387 fallen soldiers; in total, more than 55,000 men are buried in France in the 12 military cemeteries of the two World Wars. The American Battle Monuments Commission is responsible for their management and maintenance.
