The area of the border chains from Sospel to Menton in the Alpes-Maritimes department presents tormented reliefs that culminate at Grand Mont (4,524 ft / 1,379 m) and Mont Razet (4,215 ft / 1,285 m) and gradually attenuate to the sea. It constitutes a site listed as a ZNIEFF (Natural Area of Faunistic and Floristic Ecological Interest). Its mostly forest vegetation testifies to the transition between Mediterranean forest systems and post-cropping stages at adrets and mountain systems at ubacs. The vegetation mainly consists of Mediterranean woodlands with holm oak, hop charm, and flowering ash, as well as pubescent oak, chestnut, and ostry groves.
