Four caryatids adorn the large (2.71 m high) Wallace fountain, designed by Sir Richard Wallace at the end of the 19th century. The idea of the English philanthropist was to provide free drinking water to the Parisian population hard hit by the aftermath of the 1870 war, while at the same time embellishing Paris. The generous donor called on the sculptor Charles-Auguste Lebourg. The caryatids represent goodness, simplicity, charity, and sobriety, as well as the four seasons. They turn their backs to each other and support at arm’s length a dome decorated with a point and dolphins.
