Beluga whales have a very thick layer of blubber which may be up to 5,9 in (15 cm) thick that provides insulation in the freezing arctic waters. They spend most of their time at the water surface but they may hold their breath for 20 minutes when searching for food. As a highly social animal, they use a wide range of vocalizations to communicate.
