The appellations of Burgundy wines
2
0
Burgundy is a wine-growing land so vast that its wines are recognized and ranked by appellations. These appellations combine the contribution of the vine, the influence of the terroir and the work of the winegrower. They are divided into 4 levels according to a classification by geographical origin. The communal appellations are 44 in number and bear the names of the villages from which the wines come. The regional appellations are divided into 6 PDO (Protected Designation of Origin). The ´premier cru´ appellations are plots delimited within the communal appellations. Finally, the ´grand cru´ appellations represent the wines from the best registered plots.
