Common spruce, the only natural spruce species in France
The only natural species of spruce in France is the common spruce (Picea abies) which grows in abundance in the mountain forests of Jura. Because of its quality wood - white, homogeneous, elastic and resistant - the species has been widely planted there, down to low altitudes. Long used as a Christmas tree supply, spruces are now challenged by Nordmann firs (Abies nordmanniana) better suited for indoor use.
