Endemic to southern Africa, leopard tortoises usually live alone and have an exceptional life expectancy of up to 75 years. Adults, they have few predators because their carapace is too strong to be damaged, even by grinding teeth. Their basic diet is vegetarian but they also absorb hyena bones and dung for the calcium intake necessary for the development of their carapace.
