The Arago 21 fossil is the face of a homo heidelbergensis discovered in the Caune de l’Arago, a cavity near the village of Tautavel where excavations have uncovered 152 human remains to date. Among these remains are, for example, Arago 148 and 149, two human incisors discovered in 2014 and 2015, or Arago 150 and 151, two teeth dated around 560,000 years old, unearthed in 2018. The Caune de l'Arago is acknowledged as a research site of paramount importance for the reconstitution of the evolution of the region's climates and the morphological evolution of the first inhabitants of Europe.
