The vertugadin of Villarceaux

From the terrace of the Château du Haut of Villarceaux, the vertugadin embankment makes up for the 63-metre difference in level to reach the water feature at the bottom. The 530-metre-long vertugadin was dug into the rock of the hill when the castle was built. It descends several levels, taking two monumental staircases before reaching the Great Pond. The vertugadin takes its name from the tight folds of the basket skirts worn by aristocratic and middle-class women since the 16th century. Italian statues from Rome and Como punctuate the walk.
