The Haras du Pin domain displays the grandeur desired by Kings Louis XIV and XV, who had it built. The castle is renowned for its large windows with small panes, its horseshoe-shaped stables similar to Versailles', its straight paths lined with trees, and the symmetry dear to the gardener Le Nôtre and the architect Jules Hardouin Mansart. The Norman writer Jean de la Varende nicknamed the site the Versailles of the Horse in his novel Leather Nose, Gentleman of Love (1936).
