Known as the water tower of Provence, the Verdon supplies water to 110 municipalities in the Bouches-du-Rhône and the Var - including the cities of Aix-en-Provence, Marseille and Toulon - representing a total of more than 2,000,000 inhabitants. It also allows the irrigation of 70,000 hectares of agricultural land and the water supply to more than 8,000 industrial sites. It is the 167 miles (270 km) long, including 87 miles (140 km) underground, 'Canal de Provence' which brings together all the hydraulic structures distributing the raw water collected in the Verdon.
