The port of Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue extends at the heart of the city. Dedicated to pleasure boating and fishing, it is the third-largest port in the English Channel. Protected from westerly winds by a pier 1,312 ft (400 m) long, it was built between 1828 and 1845. Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue was the first port liberated during the Second World War. In the following months, 117,185 tons of equipment, food, and fuel landed on its quays.
