In the 17th century, the decorator of the Gallery of Apollo in the Louvre Palace, the painter Charles le Brun, and all the artists involved in the work on the gallery were busy with the construction of the Château de Versailles. The stuccos were completed on time but not all the paintings were finished. In 1850, the architect Félix Duban was commissioned to restore and complete the gallery. Fortunately, all of Charles Le Brun’s original drawings were preserved. Duban commissioned the painter Joseph Benoît Guichard to paint a canvas for the archway above the entrance gate. The painting is entitled “The Triumph of the Earth, or of Cybele”.
