The practice of braiding in French Polynesia dates back to the time of its settlement. The 'va'a', these dugout canoes used till the middle of the 19th century to move from one motu to another, had pandanus mat sails and ropes made of braided or twisted fibers, similar to those still braided by the women of Rimatara.
