The work of the stonemasons

The Guédelon stone cutters work either on the cutting site located at the exit of the ferruginous sandstone quarry or, as here, on the construction site itself, or even in the workshops dedicated to the preparation of ornamental stones. In the Middle Ages, the stones were often first roughed and pre-calibrated directly in the quarry to limit the significant cost of transport which, over a distance of eleven miles (18 km), doubled their cost price. The job of the stonemasons was to give shape to the stones intended for the work of the masons.
