The small medieval town of Besse-et-Sainte-Anastaise in the Puy-de-Dôme department overflows with workshops and exhibition places dedicated to Auvergne craftsmanship. Typical of rural and mountain craftsmanship, it distinguishes itself by the specific work of enameled lava. The only rock with a melting point of 2,732°F (1,500°C), lava tolerates enameling, a technique consisting in covering it with a vitreous layer applied at 1,760°F (960°C) to craft decorative works.
