Discovering the ridges of the Sancy massif

The volcanic ridges of the Sancy massif crown the Dordogne valley between 4,593 and 6,187 feet (1,400 / 1,886 metres) of altitude. In summer, the hike around them takes around six hours, after 2,952 feet (900 metres) of vertical drop and about 10.5 miles (17 km) of walking, starting from Le Mont-Dore (3,444 feet / 1,050 metres) via the Chemin de la Grande Cascade or by the Capucin. The two trails that run through them – GR4 and GR30 – allow hikers to discover the glacial valleys of Chastreix-Sancy and Chaudefour classified as Nature Reserves. In winter, only experienced skiers can venture there.
