The Sainte Marguerite temple

The Church of Saint Marguerite in Riquewihr probably dates from the 12th century. In the Middle Ages, most churches were built on the same plan. The choir was surmounted by the bell tower and the adjoining nave. The lords were responsible for the choir and the bell tower, and the faithful the nave. In 1437 both Saint Marguerite's choir and bell tower were renovated. After the Reformation, the first Protestant mass was celebrated there in 1535. The church was destroyed in 1849 and replaced by two monuments, the Protestant church on the same site and the Catholic one outside the ramparts.
