The Battle of La Hougue took place amid the Nine Years' War (1688-1697). By order of Louis XIV, the fleet of Vice-Admiral de Tourville was expected to invade England and restore James II. On May 29, 1692, his boats left to embark soldiers at La Hougue, but 88 English ships, equipped with 6,750 cannons, forced him to attack. The French fleet renounced its landing and partly left to take refuge beyond Cap de La Hague. 13 ships returned to the bay of La Hougue and were set on fire by the English, who came in rowboats, in front of the powerless soldiers of the island of Tatihou.
