At the end of the conflict with Rome in 52 BC, the site of the oppidum of Alésia in the municipality of Alise-Sainte-Reine in the Côte-d'Or department remained inhabited and was gradually urbanized according to Roman architectural and urban planning methods. The Gallo-Roman city was mainly unearthed during excavations carried out by the military archaeologist Émile Espérandieu (1857-1939) at the beginning of the 20th century. A semicircular theater preceded by a courtyard, several temples and forums, a civil basilica, and several monumental sanctuaries have notably been uncovered.
