The Qatar Foundation is a non-profit organisation whose stated goal is human, social, and economic development of the country, through scientific research. Founded in 1995, the Foundation has been headed since 2016 by Hind bint Hamad Al Thani, the sister of the Emir of Qatar. It was the Foundation that initiated the creation of the Education City, a school and university campus of over 4.6 mi² (12 km²) located in Al Rayyan on the outskirts of Doha. In 2012, the Foundation entrusted the Dutch architectural firm OMA with the construction of its new headquarters, located just a stone’s throw from the Qatar National Library. Architects Rem Koolhaas and Kunlé Adeyemi designed a complex of two buildings – a 187 ft (57 m) high cube for the headquarters (photo) and a three-storey Strategy Study Centre. The large cube has 12 floors and 95,144 ft² (29,000 m²) of office space. Its white precast concrete facade is pierced on all four sides by a grid of small windows that create a pixelated image of the Qatar Foundation’s logo – the Sidra tree, which grows wild throughout the country.
