Mostly famous for being the seat of the Battle of Alesia that pitted the forces of Julius Caesar against Vercingetorix's in 52 BC, Alise-Sainte-Reine is a rural municipality in the center of the Côte-d'Or department in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. The 946 acres (383 ha) of the municipal territory extend between 777 and 1,335 ft (237 and 407 m) above sea level in the Laumes plain, 31 miles (50 km) northwest of Dijon. The village of 572 inhabitants is implanted at the foot of Mont Auxois, formerly occupied by a Gallic oppidum then by a Gallo-Roman city.
