In return for its role in the expulsion of the pirates of Corsica, Pisa obtained in 1077 the management of the island by its bishop and started its Christian reconquest by encouraging the construction of churches. Installed in the heart of the 'pieve', they made it possible to gather the difficult to control seasonal populations.
