The town of Castellane, the least populated sub-prefecture of France in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department, is dominated by the natural site of Le Roc which rises to 3,051ft (930m), i.e more than 656ft (200m) above the Verdon. From the city of Castellane originally located on the Roc in the High Middle Ages, remains the Notre-Dame du Roc chapel - a vestige of the former convent of La Merci - surmounted by a marble statue of the Virgin visible from far away.
