It was with the Lynx of Alsace that WWF France launched the reintroduction of the species in 1985. It disappeared from France in 1640, and the brown bear was exterminated between 1750 and 1760 by seigniorial hunts. Until 1993, 21 lynx were reintroduced in the Vosges mountains. Five have since disappeared or been shot. All specimens are monitored by telemetry and radio tracking. Today, the lynx has settled permanently in the Vosges. It is a super predator that has its place in the natural balance of the forest. For instance, it prevents the deers from becoming too numerous.
