The root system of the rhizophores of Grande-Terre acts as a veritable purification station. It filters wastewater, recycles organic matter and traps pollutants and non-biodegradable waste. In urban zones, the mangrove areas therefore become particularly vulnerable places, highly polluted and sometimes deteriorated. They are also threatened by pollution from mining exploitation and aquaculture.
