Walruses (Odobenus rosmarus) inhabit the rocky shores of the Arctic regions and opt in winter for polynyas (thin-iced areas) to easily break the ice and rise to the surface. Very sociable, they live in close physical contact in hierarchical colonies of several hundred individuals and rest in pairs on floes, these flat fragments of sea ice.
