The red livery of the REP type K designed by the engineer Robert Esnault-Pelterie in 1913 catches the eye of visitors to the Great War Hall of the Musée de l’Air et de l’Espace (Air and Space Museum). At the beginning of the First World War, the Type K was indeed used by the military for reconnaissance missions. However, it was very quickly discarded in favour of models developed by Farman, Blériot, or the Voisin brothers. Built with nacelle fuselages, these aircraft were better suited to flying observation. A true visionary of civil aviation and then of liquid combustion rockets, Robert Esnault-Pelterie registered more than 250 patents throughout his life.
