A visionary scallop

The European Pecten maximus scallop is a seafood delicacy, praised by chefs and foodies around the world. However, it isn't widely known that this mollusc has more than 200 eyes, each a millimetre in diameter. Each eye is equipped with a lens and a concave mirror that reflects light. A bit like the surface of a reflecting telescope. This gives the scallop a field of vision of around 250 degrees, comparatively much wider than the 180° of the human field of vision!
