In ancient times, Mont Tombe was a sanctuary for the dead. It consists of an isolated granite rock that rises above the thick forest of Scissy. In 1829, the geographer François Manet published a theory according to which the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel was flooded by the sea following a cataclysm. In truth, recent studies contradict this account. Yet the myth is firmly established. In fact, it was the slow and gradual rise in sea level over thousands of years that gradually led to the disappearance of the Scissy forest.
