Ninon's refuge

0
When Ninon de Lenclos finally became mistress of the Marquis of Mornay around 1650, she moved to the castle of Villarceaux. He built for her a small pavilion at the edge of a basin. Today, the ceiling of her bedroom still shows a grotesque decor (mix of animals and flowers) where fauns intermingle with ram heads and flowers. A lion without claws or tongue would represent the coat of arms of the Marquis. A cabinet with a rounded ceiling adjoins the bedroom and is painted with allegories in grisaille representing courage and pleasure.
