Located on the northeast coast of Martinique in the locality of La Trinité, the Caravelle peninsula has been deforested and exploited by man since the 17th century. There, he installed sugar cane cultures succeeded by cattle breeding. Since the creation of a nature reserve on 959 acres (388 ha) in the eastern part of the peninsula on March 2, 1976, all the dwellings and farms have disappeared, and the landscapes have changed. The vegetation has strongly evolved, and most of the former pastures have been reforested.
