Collecting dried flax

The cultivation of fibre flax is an integral part of the Haute-Normandie regional tradition. Growing flax requires solid know-how, specific equipment, responsiveness, and passion. Harvesting is done by specific machines that pull the whole plant out, from the roots to the head, as mowing would destroy the fibres. The straw is then laid in parallel strips on the ground to begin drying, or retting. When the flax is fully retted, it is picked up. Once again, the flax growers’ know-how comes into play, as the straw must be picked up at the right time, neither too dry nor too wet.
