During the Middle Ages, the monks of the Abbaye de Cîteaux built the Clos de Vougeot as a winery estate. The austerity of the monk’s life was dictated by Saint-Benoit: “ora et labora”, which means pray and work. They became winemakers as local wealthy donators gave them the Clos de Vougeot land to work on. A few miles from their Abbey, they began to work the pinot noir variety of grapes.
