The first ‘sign’ of Jesus

In his monumental painting ‘The Wedding at Cana’, Veronese followed the indications of the Gospel of St. John. In this text, the apostle recounts that Jesus changed the water into wine when the beverage was running low, without the knowledge of the guests and the bride and groom. At the centre of the table, Mary and Jesus wear a golden halo that makes them recognisable. Mary encourages her son to come out of anonymity: Jesus thus gives the first ‘sign’ of his power to his disciples. Seated at the far left of the painting, only the bride and groom seem to be cut off from the joyous celebration. The painting is exhibited in the Salle des Etats in the Louvre.
