The MUCEM, Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations, is the first major national museum placed under the supervision of the Ministry of Culture dedicated to the civilizations of the Mediterranean in the 21st century. Spread over three sites and 147,637 square feet (45,000 m²), it opened its doors on June 7, 2013, during Marseille's mandate as the European capital of culture. The heart of the MUCEM is the modern building visible on the left of Fort Saint-Jean built on the former J4 port jetty by the architect Rudy Ricciotti associated with Roland Carta.
